The basis for the establishment of an integrated management system for the entire Sivash ecosystem for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and their resources and in support of the sustainable development was established.

Project description:

Local awareness of the key issues confronting the Sivash wetlands was raised and the issue was given a national profile through television coverage.

Key activities included:

- drafting a zonation plan for the entire Sivash ecosystem based on comprehensive surveys of biological and physical characteristics of the region including the adjacent agricultural fields, which leads to, among others, a set of recommendations for conservation measures;

- stimulating participation of local stakeholder groups in the establishment of the integrated management system;

- raising public awareness of local stakeholder groups on the international importance of the Sivash wetlands and their biodiversity and on the use of integrated management.

The project was financed by the Netherlands’ Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the framework of the Netherlands’ Programme for the International Nature Management.
